This experience has taught me that real discipline isn’t about becoming a robot. It’s about real change within yourself and taking action even when it’s hard and it’s about staying the course even when progress seems nonexistent.

Discipline is the bridge between where you are and where you dream of being. It’s often perceived as this rigid taskmaster, forcing you down a narrow path. However, I’ve learned that genuine discipline isn’t only about brute force (sometimes that is necessary).

But it’s really about making conscious choices aligned with your goals, even when your emotions tempt you astray. That is why I think that Christianity, fitness, and self-improvement complement each other well.

The Power of “Why”: Fueling Your Disciplined Actions

Without a strong “why,” discipline becomes a chore that you’ll quickly just stop doing. If you’re trying to eat healthy because someone told you to, it’s going to be a struggle.

But when you connect your actions to something deeply meaningful, the energy shifts. This is where your long-term goals come into play, serving as a guiding light.

Ask yourself: Why is this goal important?

Maybe it’s about being healthy for your family, achieving a lifelong dream, or simply proving something to yourself. Write down your why, make it visible, and revisit it often. Remind yourself why you started in the first place. This can be the game-changer you need to carry on.

Taming the Inner Resistance: Why Discipline Can Be Difficult

Our brains are wired to seek pleasure, take the path of least resistance, and avoid discomfort. This survival mechanism served us well for centuries of survival.

However, it also fuels our inborn tendency to sin… Taking us off course of both our goals and our journey to more holiness.

But in a world of instant gratification, this very mechanism will sabotage our goals. Recognize this isn’t about completely avoiding failure— it’s about understanding our inherent wiring of being flawed.

You will fail and slip up. But that’s fine. You just need to be aware of it and minimize it to keep moving toward your goals.

1. Set SMART Goals That Resonate

The acronym SMART— Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound—is more than corporate jargon; it’s a blueprint for effective goal setting.

Vague aspirations like “lose weight” often lack the clarity needed to drive action. Get specific about how much weight, by what date, and what steps you’ll take.

This clarity gives your disciplined efforts direction. Passion and perseverance, also known as grit, play a critical role in navigating the challenges on the path to achievement, especially in competitive environments. 

This reminds us that it’s okay to start small; small actions, when done consistently, build momentum over time.

The Book of Proverbs says “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18 KJV). By reading this, it is clear to see that we need a vision to accomplish our goals, otherwise those goals will perish.

2. Harness the Power of Routine and Habit Stacking

Routines might seem rigid, the opposite of our “rugged individualistic spirits”. This is where the “human element” comes in— we’re creatures of habit. Believe it or not, you are already very consistent at some things. You just want to become consistent with certain things.

That’s where discipline defines what that is.

Instead of overhauling your entire life overnight, which I don’t recommend at all, start by embedding small positive habits into your existing routine aka “habit stacking”.

For example, if you already brew coffee each morning, tack on 5 minutes of prayer or Bible reading immediately after. This is just a small and random example.

The point is small changes when practiced consistently yield significant results.

A consistent morning routine sets the tone for your entire day, enabling you to make better choices and stay focused on your goals, contributing to your self-confidence and peace of mind.

1 Corinthians 14:40 says “Let all things be done decently and in order.”

By reading this we can see that we need to make an effort to do all things well and with intentional planning.

3. Break It Down: The Art of Micro-Goals and The 2-Minute Rule

A mountain is climbed one step at a time. The same principle applies to achieving challenging goals. Breaking them down into manageable steps transforms the daunting into doable.

Don’t try to go from couch potato to marathon runner in a week— that’s a recipe for burnout, injury, disappointment, and failure you won’t recover from.

Remember, you don’t have to be perfect, just consistent. 

For example, if you want to add more activity to lose more weight, start with a 15-minute walk three times a week. 

The “two-minute rule” also suggests knocking out tasks that take two minutes or less immediately.

Embrace these small wins, they pave the way for bigger victories down the line.

Proverbs 21:5 tells us that “the plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance.” Being diligent in small tasks and ramping up the difficulty over time is a good tactic to use.

To live a life aligned with your values means sometimes declining things that don’t serve that vision. Each time we say “yes” to something non-essential, we’re essentially saying “no” to our own goals.

By learning to say “no,” you carve out more time and energy for what actually aligns with your goals, enhancing your focus and allowing you to say “yes” to things that contribute to both personal and professional growth.

It’s about aligning your actions with your priorities. You can use techniques like the  Eisenhower Matrix or ABC method to manage your time better and prioritize your tasks.

The Bible says “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). While we can work our tails off for the things we desire it is ultimately up to God to give it to us.

That being said I have made seeking Christ my top priority and the Bible tells you to do the same.

5. Embrace Technology as Your Ally

Technology isn’t the enemy; it’s a tool that when wielded wisely, can bolster our efforts toward consistency. Explore productivity apps like Trello for task management, use time-tracking software to pinpoint your productivity leaks, or try apps that temporarily block distracting websites like social media if need be.

Remember, your phone can be a tool for good or a source of distraction. It all comes down to how you choose to use it.

There are numerous options that can significantly increase your productivity and help you build positive habits. These tools can act as your digital accountability partners, helping you stay on track and make consistent progress.

Ecclesiastes 10:10 says “If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use more strength, but wisdom helps one to succeed.”

It essentially says that if you don’t use the tools at hand to their potential then you’ll work harder than you need to but the wisdom to use them correctly will bring success.

The first step to fixing a problem is acknowledging its existence. A simple habit tracker can provide a visual representation of your progress and hold you accountable. Even better, find an accountability partner— someone who’ll celebrate your wins and encourage you through plateaus.
