Alright, let’s talk about integrating the faith into your self-defense journey. I remember when I first started, I was worried about how to mesh my biblical beliefs with my tactical and self-defense training.

Before I truly began following God’s Word I had already been training for a number of years and had a deep passion for the hobbies, the gear and the community. All the cool stuff associated with the tactical and self-defense world.

I thought that I was going to have to drop all of it until I was led by the Holy Spirit through prayer and learning the Word.

Let me tell you, it’s not only possible to train as a believer, in my opinion it’s essential.

Mixing faith with self-defense training has a twofold purpose. First, it gives me the skills to keep myself and my community safe and more biblically aligned. Second, it bolsters my spiritual foundation, reminding me to use my abilities in line with my biblical beliefs.

The blend of biblical principles and practical skills creates a well-rounded approach to self-defense. It gives me the foundation to act decisively, biblically, and ethically whenever various challenges arise. Here’s an example:

Turning The Other Cheek

Here’s the elephant in the room for anyone who knows anything about what Jesus taught in : balancing the whole “turn the other cheek” thing with practical safety.

That’s a tough one, right?

But here’s how I see it: Jesus taught us to be peacemakers and to love one another, not necessarily become doormats in all situations. He also taught us “Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends” in John 15:13.

Sometimes, the most loving thing we can do for others is to put ourselves in harms way to protect them. Even if it means laying down your own life for them. That’s the whole point of your training.

It’s about love, wisdom and discernment, not looking for a fight or the overly hyped concept of “becoming a warrior” that you see on social media.

Now let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of starting your Christian self-defense training. You might feel like a fish out of water, especially if you are just getting into self-defense for the first time. But don’t worry, I’ve got some practical tips to help you out on your path.

In self-defense training, I learn strategies to handle potential threats and it’s far more than the stuff you see in the movies. All of my training is grounded in the faith and I’m not just prepping for potential conflict but promoting peace and protection through various techniques not as popularized as the flashy stuff.

Mixing faith with self-defense training can be a game-changer for safety and readiness. Here’s how I do it.

1) Finding the Right Training and Instructors

Getting the right training is key. I look for instructors who have a blend of Christian values and quality experience and instruction. You want someone who gets where you’re coming from spiritually and has the experience to train you appropriately.

When picking a a place to learn and a training program, I think about:

They are few and far between (which is why I became a firearms instructor) so it’s likely that there aren’t any in your area. Seeking online resources like this site, and others in the niche, is another great way to learn.

For hands on training you might have to join a secular gym and apply the faith on your own.

2) Bringing Bible Study Into Training and Preparedness

Here’s something I wish I’d done from the start: incorporating more Bible study into my training routine and general preparedness.

I started focusing on verses about discernment, strength and wisdom surrounding my training and it really helps center my mind and remind me why I’m doing this.

Alright, now let’s talk about the essential self-defense techniques every Christian man should know.

It’s not all about learning how to throw a punch! The actual physical techniques are for the mats, but these basic techniques are crucial to know for Christian self-defense training.

First off, non-violent conflict resolution should always be your first option whenever possible. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve defused a situation just by using my words appropriately.

It’s like Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Learn to use a calm voice, open body language, and active listening in the appropriate circumstances.

Also “turning the other cheek” to certain insults or offenses is what Christ taught us in Matthew 5:38-39 and it directly applies here.

These skills have saved me from bad situations more times than I can count plus they’ll just make your life easier.

By blending these elements, we can approach self-defense training with a mindset that honors the faith.

Basic Physical Self-Defense Moves

Now, don’t get me wrong, knowing some basic physical self-defense moves is important too.

I’m talking about simple stuff like how to break a grip and create distance. The basics of boxing, kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and Krav Maga are all good places to train in and you should start there when looking into disciplines to train.

Situational Awareness

Situational awareness is huge, guys. It’s about being aware of your surroundings and “trusting your gut”.

I don’t really like that saying anymore because I trust in the Lord above all, but He did build an intuition and certain instincts into our framework as humans created in His image so we need to utilize them.

So many people walk around oblivious with their nose buried in their phones nowadays. We’re all guilty of it from time to time but that has to change.

Now, I make a point to stay alert, especially in unfamiliar places. It’s not about being paranoid; it’s about being prepared, alert. and aware.

De-escalation Techniques

De-escalation techniques are a hard skill to embrace, especially for some men. It’s all about suppressing your ego and embracing humility. Some guys struggle more than others, but it’s all too easy to let yourself get heated when someone else starts coming at you mouthing off.

Each situation is entirely different but I have found through my experience as a Sheriff’s Deputy, that showing respect even to someone who’s angry can go a long way.

Here’s the thing: these techniques aren’t just about self-defense. They’re about being a light in dark situations. By handling conflicts with grace and wisdom, we’re living out our faith in a practical way. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.

Remember, the goal isn’t to win fights. It’s to avoid them when possible and to be prepared when avoidance isn’t an option.

Building Strength In Body and Spirit

Let me tell you, building strength in both body and spirit is key to becoming a true Christian protector. When I first started my journey in faith-based protection, I quickly realized it wasn’t just about pumping iron or memorizing Bible verses. Getting stronger physically and spiritually is crucial for any Christian man in self-defense training. I know that physical training boosts my ability to handle tough situations, while spiritual growth deepens my connection to God and strengthens my moral compass and faith.
